Hot Take: The Delter Coffee Press

The Delter Coffee Press is the latest brewer on the block. Almost. The kickstarter (which will be linked at the end) is live as of this post, and is about 1/3rd funded with roughly 2 weeks to go. I stumbled upon this brewer on Instagram and was instantly intrigued. I am vocal about my love for the Aeropress and everyone who has ever worked with me in coffee knows this. I have a Chemex tattooed on my arm and the only regret I have is that I didn't get an Aeropress in it's place. I have never had a bad cup on the Aeropress.

The Aeropress has seen massive success in the past few years going from a backpacker's hidden coffee secret to being in most every 3rd wave barista's arsenal of brewers and being sold on shelves at places like Target & World Market. Some people are bothered by its all-plastics construction, but I am not one of those people. It is durable, portable, and reliable. There are a small handful of products on the market like the Aeropress, but none have reached the popularity and reputation that the Aeropress has.

Enter the Delter Coffee Press.

Now there is NO denying it is almost identical to an Aeropress at first glance. But if you can get past that (kind of unavoidable) ripoff of design, you will see the guts of this brewer actually offer something new and of interest to the coffee geeks out there.

The Delter has what they are calling "The Jet Seal". This allows it to do "Injection Brewing" (all of the buzzwords). Essentially, from what I can gather, the Delter is like an Aeropress with a water-flow valve. By having a volumetric brew chamber that allows you to add a precise amount of water evenly virtually eliminates agitation on the brew bed, similar to espresso. Delter claims that this results in a cup of coffee with more clarity and less bitterness. They also tote a faster brew time. This could be seen as appealing if you're in a situation that every second counts (say.. your dorm room running behind for your 8 AM class?) however I don't know that it is as big of a selling feature as they think it is.

Personally, I've backed this project on Kickstarter strictly out of curiosity. Agitation pros and cons are widely disputed across the industry by many coffee professionals. Some recommend borderline-violent agitation (stirring the Aeropress 10+ times before plunging) , and others go for as little agitation as humanly possible (think Yama cold drip tower). Does this brewing method make sense for this style of brewer? Or is it just another gimmick in an over-saturated market of brew products that fall short, offering only diminishing returns. Delter seems to be teasing some additional products in the works too, so funded or not I think we will see Delter Coffee pop up again.

Who knows, maybe they're the next company to see rapid industry growth like Cafflano.
